In this photo taken on September 11, 2001, a man stands in the rubble at Ground Zero, and calls out asking if anyone needs help, after the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers in New York. Seventeen years later, more than 1,000 victims of the hijacked plane attacks have yet to be identified. But in a New York lab, a team is still working to identify the remains. The more than 22,000 pieces of human remains found at the site since the attacks have all been tested, and though progress is slow, forensic scientists refuse to give up. President Trump and first lady Melania Trump walk along the September 11th Flight 93 memorial, in Shanksville, Pa. on Tuesday. In a speech, Trump honored the “band of brave patriots” aboard a Sept. 11 flight that crashed in Pennsylvania and sent a message that the nation would “never, ever submit to tyranny.” Trump praised those who “took control of their destiny and changed the course of history.” He added: “A piece of America’s heart is buried on these grounds, but in its place has grown a new resolve to live our lives with the same grace and courage as the heroes of Flight 93.” Ahead of the speech, Trump took to Twitter, interspersing messages about Sept. 11 with his thoughts on the Justice Department. Apparently quoting from a segment on Fox News, he tweeted at 7:08 a.m., “We have found nothing to show collusion between President Trump & Russia, absolutely zero, but every day we get more documentation showing collusion between the FBI & DOJ, the Hillary campaign, foreign spies & Russians, incredible.” A minute later, he retweeted a message about his Sept. 11 proclamation, adding the hashtags, “#NeverForget #September11th.” Just minutes after that, he tweeted about the “media leak strategy.” (Photo by Evan Vucci/AP Photo)

One of the most iconic photos from Sept. 11, 2001 was taken by then AP photographer Doug Mills. In the photo, former President George W. Bush's Chief of Staff Andy Card can be seen whispering into the ear of the president to give him word of the plane crashes into the World Trade Center. “Mr. President, a second aircraft has hit the World Trade Center," Card said. «America’s under attack.” At the time, Bush was at a photo op, reading a book with schoolchildren. As he was told, Bush waited in the classroom a few more moments, in an effort to not alarm the children. He would address the nation hours later: „Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America,“ Bush said. „These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.“ (Photo by Doug Mills/AP Photo)

As the World Trade Center’s South Tower collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001, photographer Stan Honda was in Lower Manhattan, taking pictures of the scene. He ducked into a building lobby, and “a woman came in completely covered in gray dust,” Honda recalled in 2011. “You could tell she was nicely dressed for work and for a second she stood in the lobby. I took one shot of her before the police officer started to direct people up a set of stairs, thinking it would be safer off the ground level.” The woman was Marcy Borders, who had recently begun working for Bank of America in the World Trade Center when the first plane struck. She was 28 at the time, and Honda’s haunting photo of her became one of the most iconic images of the worst day in American history. The image — and Borders — became known as “Dust Lady.” Borders became severely depressed and started “smoking crack” in the years after the attack, she told The New York Post, before finally finding “peace of mind” after rehab and the death of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. But then, sickness struck: Borders received a diagnosis of stomach cancer in August 2014. She died in 2015 at the age of 42. #neverforget (Photo by Stan Honda/AFP/Getty Images)
