Mezcal is a drink like no other. “El elíxir de los dioses” (the elixir of the gods) has been consumed at quinceañeras, weddings and funerals for generations in Oaxaca. A cousin of tequila, #mezcal is handcrafted by farmers in small batches from the maguey plant, which takes 7 to 30 years to reach maturity. There are roughly 30 different species of the plant used to make mezcal in Oaxaca, each with a distinct flavor: tobalá, which takes an average 15 years to grow, has a smooth, fruity taste, while tepeztate, which matures in about 25 years, is strong and earthy. When a plant is harvested, its sugar-rich base, the piña, is dug out of the ground; this “pineapple” is the key to mezcal. The piñas will be covered with rocks in an embers-lined pit and roasted for hours, giving mezcal its famously smoky taste. They are crushed and fermented; the mixture is then distilled several times over wood-burning ovens, yielding a spirit that is rated between 35% and 90% alcohol. @brett_gundlock took this photo of a field of espadín maguey, which will be harvested before it pollinates. So many #tennis players identify @serenawilliams as their hero and inspiration. So she probably could have predicted that her next opponent would be someone who wants to be like her one day. One such player is @naomiosakatennis, the rising star from Japan whose overwhelming desire was to play Williams in the final. And that’s exactly what’s about to happen. The compelling matchup will make #NaomiOsaka the first woman born in Japan to play in a Grand Slam final. In an interview, she recalled that as a child she often dreamed about playing Serena Williams in a #GrandSlam final. But as reverent as @naomiosakatennis seemed, she also gave a hint about her own competitive fire when she was asked how those dream matches turned out. “I don’t dream to lose,” she replied. @besolomon took this photo of #SerenaWilliams playing Anastasija Sevestova (@nastysevastova) yesterday. Swipe left to see a photo of @naomiosakatennis, who beat @madisonkeys to advance to the final. ?

From @tmagazine | In the mid-20th century, when #Detroit was flush with manufacturing money, #Michigan became the epicenter of the Modernist experiment. Here, @andrewlambdinmoore photographed the architect Minoru Yamasaki’s currently unoccupied Reynolds Metals Regional Sales Office in the suburb of Southfield. The building makes use of his signature glass curtain walls and intricate grille work. #MinoruYamasaki, the most prolific and high-profile builder of the period, helped design Detroit and its suburban sprawl, as well as high-profile projects around the U.S. like the World Trade Center. Born in Seattle to #Japanese immigrants, he earned an architecture degree from @uofwa before moving to NYC in 1934. According to a recent biography of the architect, the Yamasaki family’s “Japanese heritage made them unwelcome” in NYC’s wealthiest enclaves. So Minoru eventually bought a piece of farmland outside the village of Troy, New York, where he’d later build his own office. “I’ll be honest with you,” Martin Lewison, 52, told his students on the first day of class on Tuesday. “One of the reasons I took this job is that there’s a theme park across the street.” For Martin, an amusement park enthusiast obsessed with roller coasters, there’s no ignoring the fact that Turbulence — Adventureland’s plunging, spinning coaster — can be seen from the business school at Farmingdale State College. Martin, an assistant professor of marketing and management, works his amusement park expertise into his curriculum. He says he’s ridden over 1,800 different roller coasters in more than 33 different countries over the last dozen years. After the class, he drove the few short blocks to the park and walked over to Turbulence. He was the only person on the ride in a shirt and a tie. “It’s got a lot of punch for a small footprint,” he said with admiration. “I’d travel 3,000 miles to ride something like this.” #? Here, @thecadejo photographed Professor Lewison riding the Ladybug, another Adventureland coaster.

Oh, gawd. Not another profile of @chloessevigny. She’s a cooler-than-thou fashionista who also plays supporting roles in indie movies — the #ItGirl to end all It Girls. We get it. ✨ That was our reporter Brooks Barnes’s reaction when someone suggested an article about Chloë Sevigny, whose latest film, “Lizzie,” a lesbian-tinged take on Lizzie Borden and the infamous ax murders, arrives in theaters tomorrow. There was nothing new to say, he thought. But, he admits, “I was wrong.” Tired of being defined more by her offscreen aura than by her acting — she was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe — #ChloeSevigny, 43, produced “Lizzie” so that she could, for the first time in her 50-film career, play the lead part. Set in 1892, the movie finds a rage-filled @chloessevigny romancing Kristen Stewart’s Irish housemaid and literally smashing the patriarchy (in the face, with an ax). “Lizzie is this feminist American outlaw, sort of a pioneer for the idea of female autonomy,” said @chloessevigny, who was photographed here by @nataliamantini. “Even today, I think a lot of women find themselves in circumstances where they’re under a man’s control — husband, father, boss — and are desperate to change those circumstances.” Visit the link in our profile to read more.
