The chef @fanygerson’s #RoshHashana feast is born of her Jewish heritage and Mexico City upbringing: think matzo balls with chiles. While on the surface Mexican and Jewish cooking couldn’t be more distant, they’re both “very tradition-rooted, very proud, very family-oriented,” said Fany, who grew up in Mexico. The chef, 42, runs a Mexican sweet shop, @lanewyorkina, is co-owner of a doughnut business, @doughdoughnuts, and celebrates her family’s culinary traditions by cooking a vast Mexican-Jewish meal for her friends on Rosh Hashana. This year, her celebration took place last night, the first night of #RoshHashana. Tonight, she’ll prepare a dinner for patrons of the Mexico City-inspired restaurant @casapublicabk, where her husband is an owner. Among the menu items shown in this photo by @danielkrieger: challah laced with flowery Mexican cinnamon and tart apples, rugelach with chipotle peppers and cherries and a spicy take on #matzoballsoup. Sarah established herself in London 4 years later with “Penis Nailed to a Board,” her first solo gallery show. Her art over the years has specialized in rudeness — although unvarnished honesty with a moral undertone may be more accurate. It may startle Americans, who tend to be more prudish than the British. But this month, her first American museum retrospective — and the largest exhibition of her work yet — opens at the @newmuseum. Sarah’s blunt yet ambiguous meditations on gender, class and language make her one of the few great artists to emerge from the YBA ranks. But it wasn’t always like that. “I was quite reconciled to people not being so interested in me, but that freed me up,” she said. @ana__cuba took this photo of Sarah wearing one of the signature components of many of her sculptures: a piece of pantyhose filled with a wad of fluffy material. DNA tests, camera traps, numerous spottings and pugmarks — tiger footprints — have pinned at least 13 human killings on a 5-year-old tigress that seems to have developed a taste for human flesh. A crafty man-eating tiger on the loose may sound like something out of a Rudyard Kipling tale, but it’s a real and growing problem in today’s India. Closer monitoring, new technology and stricter wildlife policies have led to a sharp increase in the tiger count, from 1,411 in 2006 to an estimated 2,500 — more than half of the world’s approximately 4,000 #tigers. @bdentonphoto took this picture of 2 of them in a tiger reserve in the state of #Maharashtra. In the case of the man-eating tiger, researchers are at a loss to explain why she started attacking humans. She has also killed some cows and horses. As the human death count rises — 3 villagers were killed in August — several politicians are demanding that the rangers simply shoot the tiger. But that might not be legal. But in 2018, all-female samba groups have generated what could be a sea change for this beloved #Brazilian musical genre. “A lot of times when you’re the only woman playing in a samba circle, you are also subject to a lot of harassing language from the guys around the samba,” said Silvia Duffrayer, a member of the band @sambaqueelasquerem. “So by forming a group made up just of women, we kind of stop that vibe from starting.” @sambaqueelasquerem is one of the most popular samba circles in Rio today. “I think people were ready and waiting to see women break into the samba circle,” said Cecilia Cruz, who plays cavaco, a stringed instrument, with the group. One part of the movement is spurred by a newfound sense of revolt among female musicians against the lyrics of some of the traditional samba circle anthems, which make light of serious crimes such as domestic violence and sexual assault. @mariamagdarre photographed Doralyce Gonzaga, who was invited to sing with the Samba Independente dos Bons Costumes in downtown Rio. China has sought for decades to restrict the practice of Islam and maintain an iron grip on #Xinjiang, which is almost as big as Alaska. Though limited to China’s western region of Xinjiang, this is the country’s most sweeping internment program since the Mao era. China has categorically denied reports of abuses, but the government’s business-as-usual defense is contradicted by overwhelming evidence: official directives, studies, news reports, construction plans and eyewitness accounts from former detainees who’ve fled. “That was a place that will breed vengeful feelings,” one man said of the internment camp where he and other Muslims were held for months. He said he was detained for reciting a verse of the Quran at a funeral. @gillessabrie photographed a mosque in the city of Kashgar, in western Xinjiang. So many parents have been detained there that the city has expanded boarding schools to take custody of older, “troubled” children. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
