The impact of undocumented workers has become a major political debate in the U.S. But migration also creates a deep emotional connection between the places the migrants left and the places they journeyed to. For generations, the western highlands of #Guatemala have sent a steady stream of migrants north. As a result, the U.S. and the promises it represents loom large in the popular imagination here, and symbols of American life are everywhere. Throughout this region, the is a recurring motif, its image adorning items as diverse as clothing, advertising and truck mud flaps. In Todos Santos Cuchumatán, the exterior walls of some homes are decorated with hand-painted U.S. flags, signaling the provenance of the money used to build them — a kind of Made in America stamp. Even in the cemetery, which was photographed here by @daniele_volpe, U.S. flags are painted on more than a dozen tombs. Visit the link in our profile to read more.

She felt a similar ambivalence throughout the 6 or so years she spent working on it. The life that the 71-year-old actress writes about is one that has been darkened by abuses and cruelties that are frustratingly commonplace for women. She opens up about the abuse she faced from her stepfather, Jock Mahoney, as a child. A stuntman and actor known by the nickname Jocko, he frequently summoned her to his bedroom alone. “I knew,” she writes. “I felt both a child, helpless, and not a child. Powerful. This was power. And I owned it. But I wanted to be a child — and yet.” The memoir also delves into some of Sally’s famous roles and relationships with celebrity co-stars like Burt Reynolds, who died last week. It recounts how she raised 3 sons through 2 marriages that ended in divorce. Though the frankness of “In Pieces” might resonate in a #MeToo era, Sally was reluctant to offer up her book as a paradigm for others. “This is just my story and it happened the way it happened,” she said. @brinsonbanks took this photo of #SallyField. But shipments of motor homes were down 18.7% in June compared with a year ago, and shipments of smaller trailers and campers were down 10.5%. @realdonaldtrump’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum are increasing costs, diminishing demand and causing concern that a 10-year boom cycle could be waning. “RVs have always preceded the rest of the economy in a downturn and in an upturn,” said Richard Curtin, a @uofmichigan economist who’s a consultant to the RV industry. He said that it could also be temporary if the problem is related to excess inventory, as some in the industry think. Still, the health of the industry bears watching. @barackobama visited Elkhart for his first domestic trip as president, when the region’s unemployment rate was the highest in the nation. Now the fretting is back. @whittensabbatini took this photo. Visit the link in our profile to read more.

The eye of the storm is expected to arrive at the Carolina coast by Friday. But tropical storm-force winds, extending 175 miles from the center, are expected to arrive on land tomorrow. The major power supplier for North and South Carolina said that the storm could knock out power for up to 3 million customers across the 2 states and that it could take several weeks to restore electricity. In addition, a huge, “life-threatening storm surge” is highly likely on the low-lying coasts of North and #SouthCarolina. @thecadejo took this photo in Charleston, South Carolina, where businesses are boarded up. Designers can’t ignore it (or they ignore it at their peril). What will they give these potential power women to wear? It’s a complicated question. I, for one, am looking forward to the answer.” When it comes to the fashion season, @nyfw is just the beginning. With @badgalriri’s show tonight, it comes to an end. Next stop: London! Here are some of the best @nytimesfashion photos taken this week, by @jtaggfoto, @vnina, @caseykelbaugh, @landonnordeman, @rebeccasmeyne, @vincenttullo and @stefaniacurto.
