Burt Reynolds, whose worldwide celebrity was launched in the 1970s, first as a freewheeling chat-show guest, then as a nude centerfold in Cosmopolitan magazine and finally as a Hollywood star, has died at 82. Tire-screeching fare such as “Smokey and the Bandit” (1977) and “The Cannonball Run” (1981) largely bookended Reynolds’s reign as a top box-office draw and cemented his onscreen persona as a carefree man’s man with an arm around a lady and his foot on the gas pedal. Off-screen, the actor developed a reputation as a hard-drinking playboy whose charm alternated with a volcanic, hair-trigger temper. In a career spanning five decades and more than 100 movie and television roles, Mr. Reynolds said he mostly chose projects that seemed “fun” at the time. (Photo by Paul Shane/AP Photo)

Even if it means sacrificing everything,” read a teaser for an ad that Kaepernick tweeted. The ad stood out as a bold statement on racial justice from Nike and as the latest demonstration of the company's values, experts said. Kaepernick then tweeted a full, commercial-style ad on Wednesday. The video showcases athletes who have overcome great obstacles to be among the best in their sports. Since the initial announcement, billboards with Kaepernick's face on them have appeared all over the country, from San Francisco to New York (pictured above). President Trump weighed in on the Nike campaign Tuesday, telling the Daily Caller that he thought Nike was sending “a terrible message” using Kaepernick in the ads, but acknowledged the company's right to take a stance. „As much as I disagree with the Colin Kaepernick endorsement, in another way . . . it is what this country is all about,“ Trump said. The ad will air on television Thursday night during the NFL's season opener as the Atlanta Falcons take on the Philadelphia Eagles. (Photo taken on Thursday by Mark Lennihan/AP Photo)

A double-whammy struck this week, Typhoon Jebi and earthquake-induced landslides, which have left the country reeling. Typhoon Jebi slammed Japan as an intense Category 1 storm at landfall. The storm left at least 11 dead, and officials in Japan’s weather agency have called it the worst typhoon to strike the country since 1993. Then, on Thursday, saturated soils helped trigger landslides, which have killed at least seven, after a large earthquake near Hokkaido. Landslides are seen in Atsuma town, Hokkaido, northern Japan. But not here, well over 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean. So to find a wave like the one that surfaces in Lemoore, Calif., which is to say a nearly perfect curl, is bizarre. And very tantalizing. This is what has drawn 54 of the planet’s best surfers, who are competing in a vast concrete pool that is intended to introduce the sport to a new audience ahead of its Olympic debut in 2020. Only once before has an international event been held nowhere near open water — the first contest, several decades ago, was a disaster — and the $30 million artificial-wave complex constructed in the small farming town of Lemoore has elicited awe within the surfing community.
