In an unusual collision of geopolitics and humanitarianism, North Korea recently handed over what could be the remains of more than 50 American service members still missing from the Korean War. The transfer was the first in more than a decade. For now, the most difficult work is taking place on 70 exam tables in the sterile, harshly lighted facility at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, where staffers probe and test fragments of past lives. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency workers puzzle over the abstract clues, trying to match a tooth filling with a missing soldier’s dental record or a clavicle bone with the chest X-ray of a serviceman who once had a tuberculosis screening. Even at the world’s preeminent forensic anthropology facility, progress is slow; an individual case can take from weeks to a decade. This year, 162 servicemen have been identified. But nearly 1,400 cases are pending — with more than 500 others listed as inactive because the clues ran out before an identification could be made. Photos by Marie Eriel S. When President Trump took the stage on Thursday in Billings, Mont., it had all the trappings of his signature rallies. Except one person. Positioned just beyond Trump's shoulder — and thus almost constantly visible throughout the televised event — was Tyler Linfesty, a 17-year-old from Billings West High School. He wore a plaid shirt, a hand-me-down from his brother. And where others zigged, Tyler zagged. «We have the best economy in history!» Trump declared at one point in his speech, repeating a claim that has been fact-checked as false. Tyler made a quizzical expression, then turned to look at his friend. «And more Americans are working today than ever, ever, ever before!» Trump stated. Tyler glanced upward and appeared to mouth: «Is that true?» Scores of other people watching the rally on television were quick to zero in on Tyler's divergent reactions. Tyler said it was never his intent to troll Trump. «I wasn't planning on trolling him or protesting. When I heard something that I disagreed with, I visibly disagreed. I had to be real with myself. I'm not going to pretend to support something I don't support.» Photo by Kevin Lamarque/REUTERS

In a blistering column, The Post's Sally Jenkins writes of Saturday's controversial U.S. Open final featuring Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka: Chair umpire Carlos Ramos «took what began as a minor infraction and turned it into one of the nastiest and most emotional controversies in the history of tennis, all because he couldn’t take a woman speaking sharply to him.» Tennis great Billie Jean King has also come to Serena's defense, saying: «When a woman is emotional, she’s 'hysterical' and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same, he's 'outspoken' and there are no repercussions. Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard.» A link to Sally Jenkins's column is in our bio.
